5 Genius Ideas to Maximize Storage Space in Your Home

If I had a dollar for every time a client said to me that they desperately need one thing, I would be a wealthy woman! And what exactly is that one thing? MORE STORAGE. When I get contacted by people who want to redesign their spaces, nine out of ten times the very first thing they say is “we don’t have enough storage space!” Certainly one of the biggest challenges Hong Kong homeowners and renters face is finding enough room to put away all of their belongings. Most buildings have very little storage; some literally have none besides a shoe cabinet. It never ceases to amaze me!

That’s where B Squared Design comes in - with some creative thinking and smart design choices, we are able to increase storage while at the same time creating a beautiful, clutter-free haven. How exactly do we do it? In this blog post, I share five of the key ways we go about creating more storage options in your house. Let's dive in:

Utilize Vertical Space

When it comes to storage, don't forget about the full volume of vertical space in your home. Install floor-to-ceiling shelving units or bookcases to make the most of those high ceilings. This not only provides ample storage for books and display items but also allows you to organize items like baskets, boxes, and files for various purposes.

Optimize Underutilized Spaces

Look for areas in your home that are typically underused and that can be transformed into valuable storage space. For instance, the area under your staircase can be converted into stylish and functional storage or a cozy reading nook with built-in shelves. The area beneath your bed is a wealth of storage space if you opt for a bed frame with built-in drawers or a mattress gas-lift function. Finally, don't forget about the space above your cabinets or on top of your refrigerator – these areas should be used rather than left to collect dust!

Incorporate Multi-Functional Furniture

Invest in furniture pieces that serve multiple purposes. For example, choose a coffee table with hidden compartments or drawers to store magazines, remote controls, and other small items that can quickly clutter up a space. Opt for ottomans or benches with hidden storage to keep extra blankets, pillows, or toys neatly tucked away. A storage bench is also great to use in your entryway, as it can do double duty by providing a place to sit when taking shoes on and off, while also providing storage for sporting goods, dog leashes, umbrellas etc.

Implement a Customized Closet

A great way to ensure that you’re maximizing your closet space is by installing custom-built shelving, hanging rods, and drawers. Utilize vertical space by adding additional shelves or hanging organizers for shoes, handbags, and accessories to cover every existing inch perfectly. Consider investing in closet dividers or labeled storage bins to keep your belongings organized and easily accessible.

Embrace Smart Storage

Take advantage of modern solutions made specifically for the storage of particular items. Examples of this are kitchen drawers made just for holding spices or pull-out racks in cabinets to keep pots and pans in order and make it easy to access them even in back corners of cabinets. Use magnetic strips inside your bathroom cabinets to organize metal tools like tweezers, nail clippers, and bobby pins. Incorporate drawer dividers and small labeled storage containers to keep your drawers tidy with specific locations for every item, rather than all dumped in together.

By implementing these storage ideas, you can transform your home into a clutter-free and organized space. Remember to think creatively and utilize every inch of available room. With a little planning and some smart design choices, you'll be amazed at how much storage you can create in your house.
